  Welcome to Blog #5! Week 9 placed a focus on the data strand of mathematics. Although I took higher education in this content, it is not my favourite, so I was very interested in how to approach it from a different perspective than the usual ‘what is the probability that Emily draws a red marble?’. We talked about this in class, but a lot of us went through the same process where data and probability had us answer questions based on the likelihood of events happening or surveying our peers about their favourite ice cream flavour (Susin, week 9). There was not much differentiation about this strand among most of us students in the class. I found it interesting reading the textbook on this subject and taking a look at the new curriculum expectations to better understand what I would be teaching instead. It's week 7 and 8 already!! Wow has time flown by. Here is a little recap of meaningful learning moments I had from the past 2 weeks. Clipart Week 7 had us investigate fractions and decimals. I really liked that both the textbook and our in-class instruction started with the idea of seeing fractions and decimals around us. When we take the time to think about it, they are everywhere from measuring out amounts to bake or understanding how to shop and purchase fuel. There is an interesting relationship between all these numbers and it is important to understand how ½, 0.5, 25/50, 50% are all the same thing. When we did the activity in class “I have… who has?”, I was amazed at how many applications can be made from such a fun and interactive game. I also liked that we touched upon ways to make the game more approachable to all students.  Hi! I cannot believe we have hit the halfway mark for this course. It is going by so quickly During the last 2 weeks, there were many activities and learning opportunities to complete. I have viewed many videos (ex: turkey time assignment) about instructional practices, which helped me prepare for my FLA in week 6. However, an element that was present in both weeks 5 and 6 was teaching elements of mathematics that are newer/more predominantly found in the curriculum today.   Hi! Hope everyone had a lovely week 3 and 4! Here is what I had to share about my journey. Math Image from Vecteezy I am amazed at all the math resources we have navigated in our course already. When I look back on the math classes I had growing up, I remember a lot of worksheets, textbook questions, and tests. The highlight was always when we got to take any sort of manipulative out and have some fun learning math.  It is amazing what one can learn given the appropriate measures and guidance to do so. For example, in class week 3, we were asked to get up and out of our seats to do an activity. We were first intrigued and were able to connect to the Friends Pivot Video and understood the connection to the activity we were going to do. Learning rotations, translations and transformations can be a difficult one. Welcome back!  Each week I will take the time to reflect on my journey and post something I learned, challenged me, or helped me understand who I will be as a future educator. Considering I have a math teachable, I was excited about this course. What I have come to realize through my experiences learning and teaching mathematics so far, is that being good at math does not mean you can teach it. Thinking back to prior courses I have taken, I can remember when were the learning opportunities and difficult moments. For example, learning what Pi represented by measuring out the diameter three times with string to make up the circumference was something I still remember.
